Now more than ever, many people simply don't have the time to lie in the sun and "work" on a deep dark tan Sun City Body Bar delivers a believable, natural-looking  island tan glow, without the sun! Our highly effective formula is fast-acting and long-lasting. Airbrush Tanning evens out the skin tone by blurring out imperfections in the skin such as acne, uneven skin done, hyper pigmentation, roseacia, cellulite, and stretch marks.  Sun City Body Bar can completely customize your Airbrush Tan allowing you to achieve the exact shade you want, exactly where you want it.

What is the advantage of a Spray Tan over UV tanning?

Spray tanning is an alternative and/or additional form of tanning. People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time tanning find this form of tanning very comforting. One application with airbrush tanning will be equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, there for making it cost effective.

How Does Sunless Tanning Work?

The principle tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a "real tan" by increasing the skin's melanin levels, rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin. The action of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction between DHA and skin proteins and oxygen that produces brown compounds.  This process is similar to what occurs when you slice open an apple and the surface of the apple browns when it's exposed to the oxygen in the air. The development of color takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and the intensity of color is dependent upon the DHA concentration in the product as well as each tanner's individual skin characteristics. The color developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.

Is Spray Tanning safe?

YES! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self-tanning products that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient. DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity.

What should I wear?

Attire for women is whatever you are comfortable with. Many things can be done to minimize tan lines.  Common attire for women is swimsuits, undergarments, or disposable tops and briefs. The key is your comfort level. Attire for men is boxers, swim trunks or shorts. Your tanning specialist will use the utmost discretion. Loose fitting clothing should be worn immediately after an Airbrush Tanning Session.

How Long does a Spray Tan Last?

The longevity of a spray tan depends on the type of self tanning application, the skin's natural exfoliation process, and on the skin care regimen followed before and after application. On average, self tanners last 3-6 days for Versa Spa but longer for custom. A professionally application such as a Custom Airbrush Tan, will last longer than an at-home application, about 5-8 days, since there is usually a greater percentage of DHA used. The "life span" of a sunless tan also depends on your skin's natural exfoliation. The faster your skin turns over, the faster the sunless tan will fade. The tan created by the DHA affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to exfoliate. Following a good skin care regimen before and after sunless tanning will help a sunless tan last longer. Exfoliating prior to a sunless tanning application and keeping skin moisturized afterwards are essential. Sunless tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer, like Norvell's Prolong tan extending lotion, help hydrate skin and maintain even, natural-looking color longer.

How long should I wait after a Spray Tanning session before I shower?

It is best to wait about 8 hours after a Spray Tanning Session or using a self tanner before you bath or shower to give the DHA time to fully react with skin proteins.  We recommend 12 hours or longer for best results.

Why is keeping skin moisturized essential to maintain great sunless results?

It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner. You basically want to slow down your body's natural exfoliation process. Sunless tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer, like Norvell's Amber Sun Prolong, help hydrate skin and maintain even, natural-looking color longer by providing subtle bronzers.

Will my spray tan come off on my clothes?

If you are using a spray solution with a cosmetic bronzer, some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning. To minimize the chance of the tint transferring to clothing, we recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session. Try to refrain from physical exertion that could result in you sweating until you shower and wash off the cosmetic bronzer.  The cosmetic tint is water-soluble. Therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash.

Can a person UV tan on top of an Spray Tan?

Of course! But just remember that Sunless Tanning does not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly.

What if a person normally can't get very tan?

A person CAN get a sunless tan even if they can't get a real tan. Sunless tanning does not need a person's melanocytes to be in working order. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient in Sunless Tanning, saturates the dead skin cells in the outermost layer of skin, where it turns the protein in the dead cells golden tan.

TIPS & INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

AIRBRUSH TANNING Preparation and Tips

  1. Right before your airbrush appointment, shower, exfoliate, and shave.  If you are having any waxing done, make sure it is done at least 24 hours before your airbrush. When exfoliating, exfoliate your face, body, hands, feet and lips. Pay special attention to your arms, chest and face when scrubbing.  When scrubbing the face, it is best to scrub in a circular massaging motion, for at least a minute, concentrating on T-zone, or area prone to oil and large looking pores. After your shower, do not put any makeup, moisturizer or products on your face and body.

  1. After your airbrush, wait at least 12 hours to shower. Avoid wearing face makeup for 1 hour.  The tan starts developing 10 minutes after it is applied, but continues to develop for 24 hours.  In 12 hours, 95% of your tan will be developed, so be patient and remember that your end result will look much deeper and darker.

  1. After 12 hours, moisturize your face and body twice a day. To extend the life of your airbrush, use Prolong Moisturizer, a gradual DHA producing moisturizer that prolongs the life of your airbrush and gives you a sheer gradual dose of the sameDHA used in your airbrush.  To extend the life of the fan on your face, use Norvell Airbrush Mist, which is a sheer, non pore clogging tanning mist that evens out the skin tone and gives a fresh dose of the same DHA that is in your airbrush.

  1. Avoid exfoliating the first week of your airbrush, as that will scruff off some of the tan.

  1. Analyze your tan.  Look at areas that appear darker to lighter to see if the airbrush took to a specific area of the body better.  Sometimes certain areas of the body develop less than others depending on the condition of the skin.  That way you can target that area during your next airbrush.

VERSA SPA

Will my skin look orange?

No. The advanced technology currently used in sunless tanning solutions is designed to ensure a natural, bronze tan. The salon staffer can help you select the proper level of tanning solution to best match your skin tone.

What is Sunless Spray Tanning?

Sunless spray tanning is the spray/mist application of Sunless tanning solution to your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in Sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin begins to darken two to three hours after application and reaches its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun.

Are any sunless tanning products on the market 100% organic?

No. It is not unusual for Sunless tanning products to contain over 20 ingredients, yet only one is authorized by the FDA to provide a sunless tanning effect on the skin – DHA (Dihydroxyacetone). Although DHA is naturally derived, to date there is No 100% certified organic DHA ingredient on the market. You may see products with claims such as, “includes natural/organic ingredients”, which may be an accurate claim, but that does not mean the entire product nor the tanning agent is 100% Certified Organic.

For Ecocert’s official statement regarding organic DHA please visit www.ecocert.com/en/ecocert-statement-dha/

How should I prepare for my Sunless Spray Tanning Session?

Exfoliate and shave the day before or the day of the sunless spray tanning session (day before is preferred).

The day of the Sunless spray tanning session refrain from using moisturizers, perfumes, lotions, oils or deodorants that may create a barrier between the skin and the Sunless tanning solution. You may resume using these after your first shower or bath.

How long should I wait after a session before showering?

To give the DHA enough time to fully set, it is recommended to wait a minimum of 4 hours after a sunless spray tanning session or 8 hours for optimal results. Showering sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan. If you tan using an Instant Cosmetic Bronzer, the Instant Cosmetic Color will wash off in the shower, but the color produced by the DHA will remain.

Will swimming affect my tan?

Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the Sunless Spray Tanning results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.

Does Sunless Spray Tanning Solution have any smell after contact with my skin?

Mystic Tan and VersaSpa sunless spray tanning solution use a breakthrough odor control technology designed to virtually eliminate the odor that may be present when the solution interacts with the skin.

Will the bronzing formula stain my clothing?

No, the sunless spray tanning solution which includes a cosmetic bronzer is water soluble and will be removed after the next wash in cold water. However, in some instances, the DHA in the tanning solution may permanently stain undergarments worn during the spray session.

How long does Sunless Spray Tanning last?

A Sunless Spray Tan can last up to 7 days depending on the formulation you choose and the condition of your skin.

Are there ways to enhance the Sunless Spray Tanning results?

Yes, all VersaSpa at-home products are created to enhance and extend Professional Sunless Spray Tanning results. Over the counter products are not formulated for Sunless Tanning. They may block the tan’s application, impede the development process, and create uneven post-tan fading.

Ask your Salon Professional about MysticTan’s complete line of in-home Sunless Products to enhance and extend the life of your Professional Sunless Spray Tan.

DHA, the Key Ingredient in Sunless Tan Products

What is DHA?
The active ingredient most often used in all sunless tanners including tinted moisturizers, self-tanners, and spray tan solution is called Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. The FDA added DHA to the list of approved colors for cosmetic products in the 1970s.

Is the DHA in Sunless Spray Tanning solution safe to use?
The FDA has approved DHA for external application to the skin. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. To ensure complete protection, the FDA suggests wearing protective eyewear, nose filters, ear plugs, lip balm, and undergarments.

Is Sunless Spray Tanning Solution recommended for people with skin sensitivities or allergies?

This product is safe, however, for those with skin sensitivities or allergies, it is recommended to consult a health care professional before using the product.

What happens if Sunless Spray Tanning solution gets in the eyes?

FDA recommends that DHA not be used in the eyes or surrounding area. Protective eyewear is recommended and can be supplied by the salon. If eyes feel irritated, gently splash with water. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.

What happens if Sunless Spray Tanning solution is inhaled?

FDA recommends that DHA not be inhaled. Nose filters are recommended, which can be supplied by the salon. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.

What is the Sunless Spray Tan (FDA) advisory?

The FDA advises that users avoid inhaling or ingesting DHA or letting the spray get into the eyes. When using DHA-containing products as an all-over spray or mist, it may be difficult to avoid exposure in a manner for which DHA is not approved, including the area of the eyes, lips, or mucous membrane, or internally.

The FDA recommends protective measures to eliminate eye contact, inhalation or ingestion during a spray tan session, such as:

Eye protection

Nose filters

Ear plugs

Lip balm

Undergarments
